How Nunchucks Became a Fighting Weapon - Exploring the History!



Nunchucks is serving as a self defense weapon in America today. But, only a few people know that it was originally not a fighting weapon. 

There is a long history associated with this weapon. In this article, we are exploring the history of this weapon. But, before that it is important to recall what sort of weapon it is. 

What is Nunchucks?

Nunchucks is also called nunchaku and it is a small sized weapon made of wood. However, we also have steel made nunchaku in the modern days. 


Generally, there are two wooden sticks that are connected using a chain or rope. 


There are two holes on a stick each from which that rope or chain is passed and then connects the two sticks. It is a popular martial art and self defense weapon today. 


Nunchucks - Originally an Agricultural Tool

Nunchucks originally looked like a flail and it served as an agricultural tool in China. The Chinese villagers used it for reaping crops like rice and wheat. 

It was pretty much similar to today’s nunchaku. However, it was mainly used for cutting crops and other agricultural work. 


Nunchucks Identified by a Chinese Emperor

Once a Chinese emperor lost a battle against the Mongolians and as a result he had to go to Chinese mainland territory as he lost his original territory to Mongolians. 

So, he took his army to a village where the villagers fed him and as a result, his army assisted the villagers in agricultural work. 

The emperor discovered nunchaku and thought that this weapon can be helpful in fighting the Mongolians. 


Nunchucks Became a Fighting Weapon

The emperor and his army practiced fighting techniques with nunchucks and when they became fully trained, they attacked Mongols and defeated them to get their territory back. Then, nunchucks became a pure fighting weapon.
